Prevention Information

Prevention is a community effort.  Together, we can build a healthier, safer future for St. Francois County.  Small actions can prevent misuse, addiction, and overdose.   Learn about safe storage, disposal, fentanyl awareness, and overdose prevention.

Use Medications Safely

Follow directions. Don't share. Ask Questions. Unintentional medication overdoses are the leading cause of emergency department (ED) visits in young children.

Safe Storage

Use Locked Storage Keep all medications, including prescription and over-the-counter drugs, in a locked cabinet, closet, or safe that is out of reach and sight of children. This prevents unauthorized access and reduces the risk of accidental poisoning.

Safe Disposal

When household medicines are no longer wanted, EPA encourages you to use drug take-back programs. These take-back programs offer a safe and environmentally protective way to dispose of unwanted household medicines.

Fentanyl Awareness

2mg, the size of a pencil lead, can be enough to kill an average American. Never trust your own eyes to determine if a pill is legitimate. The only safe medications are ones prescribed by a trusted medical professional and dispensed by a licensed pharmacist.

Substance use disorders, like opioid use disorder (OUD), impact communities across America. Prevention activities help educate and support individuals, families, and communities and are critical for maintaining both individual and community health.

Together, recovery is possible.
